Saturday, Jan.19, was a nice and sunny, but cold, race day for the 6th round of the Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Practice on Friday was canceled due to the Generation 6 testing by NASCAR. Justin started the day taking over a full second off his time from last weekend. The #99 was able to qualify 7th out of 15 Pro drivers. Finishing 5th in the heat race, Justin started the feature in p.9. The feature had some hard racing with Justin running as high as p. 5 at one point. Battling with the #54 of Gregory Lang again this week, Justin lost a couple of positions and crossed the finish line in the 8th spot. A very strong run for the #99. Make sure to take the time to watch the video from the race.
The 5th round of the Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway was held Saturday, 1/12 on the Road Course. There was supposed to be a full day of practice on Friday; however, rain and fog kept the cars off the track. With limited practice, Justin was able to make some good runs through the course on Saturday, but couldn’t find the speed necessary to run in the top 5 in the Pro class. For the start of the feature, Justin lined up in the 12th position out of 13 Pro drivers. By the halfway point, Justin was running ninth. During the second half of the race, Justin had to hold off the #54 of Gregory Lang for the 8th spot. Even though it wasn’t for the lead, both drivers did a great job racing each other clean and hard for several laps. Altogether a respectable run for the #99 in his second race in the Pro Division. Starting out the 2013 season, Justin is running with the best to be the best. We will be traveling down next weekend for practice on Friday, 1/18, and Round 6 of the Winter Heat Series on Saturday, 1/19.
It was great to be able to be back in the Legend Car for the first weekend of the Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, during practice on Friday, we were unable to get the car to respond to any changes. The same problem occurred on Saturday during both races. It was a disappointing start in the Pro class. We did find out later the following week that the car has major problems with the frame. Unfortunately, this will cause us to miss the second week of the Winter Heat series coming up Jan. 5 and 6. We will be ready with new equipment for the start of the road course racing at the Winter Heat series January 12.
The last weekend of the Winter Heat Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway started out with a fast practice day on Friday. Saturday saw the #99 come away with a 4th place finish. The videos from the Heat and Feature Races are on the Video Page.
Sunday Justin started on the outside of the first row. #99 led three laps of the Heat race, was turned off course on the last lap and ended up finishing 3rd.
Justin had a great start in the Feature Race and was running 5th. It was the last race of the series and everyone was racing hard. #99 and #87 ended up coming into a turn side by side and neither made it out. They were both able to continue but Justin was now further back in the pack. A full course caution caused a single-file restart. At this point #99 was running in the 6th position. Justin was slammed from behind so hard as to knock the rear bumper off the car. The rule is a car cannot continue without a rear bumper and Justin had to come off the course. #99 ended up with a 10th place finish.
Overall, the Winter Heat series was a lot of fun and Justin gained so much experience in the car.
Justin finished 4th place overall in the final points standings out of 20 cars in the Semi-Pro Division of the 2012 Winter Heat Series. This is a tremendous accomplishment for this being Justin’s first time ever racing a Legend car, first time running on asphalt and first time racing on a road course.
It was a great time working with Dan Snyder Racing who provided Justin with the car setup and help at the track.
Justin will begin racing his #99 Legend car on ovals in March.
