Driving in his first 100-lap race, Justin Bolton of Latrobe capped a successful season by finishing first in the limited late model division of the Fall Classic at the Hickory Motor Speedway in North Carolina last month.

Bolton, who qualified in 15.48 seconds, withstood a strong challenge from runner-up Landon Huffman of Claremont, N.C. to win his second race of the season. Bolton, 18, also took first place in an event in June.

In four other races, he placed sixth, fourth twice and second.

He ranked 14th among limited late model drivers with 274 points on oval tracks. Huffman ranked second.

A member of the Lee Faulk Racing and Development team in Denver, N.C., Bolton, who drives a Chevrolet, moved to limited late model after competing in the Legend Car series as a semi-pro a year ago.

Founder Lee Faulk said Bolton might be the best driver the team has produced.

“He’s a natural,” Faulk said. “Very few drivers have caught on as immediately as he has.

“He listens well.”

Former drivers include 2011 Hickory Limited Late Model champion Pietro Fittipaldi.

Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Emerson Fittipaldi, competed in Formula 4 racing in England this year.

Co-owner Michael Faulk likes that Bolton is serious.

“He’s doesn’t eat, text, use a cell phone or spend time playing with a friend,” Michael Faulk said. “He’s focused and has a lot of dedication.”

Bolton said being part of the team has made him a better racer.

“Lee really helped me (in) being smooth on the throttle and keeping the steering steady,” Bolton said.

Lee and Michael Faulk agreed Bolton’s future is bright.

“He definitely can be a NASCAR driver,” Michael Faulk said.

Because of limited funding, Bolton competed in less than a third of races this year.

Using social media to secure sponsors, he looks forward to competing more often next season.

“It’s sad when you see kids who don’t have the ability Justin has, but have money, racing,” said Lee Faulk, noting that $160,000 is needed for a full season.

A freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Bolton is studying mechanical engineering with an emphasis on motor sports.

Justin Bolton Wins His First 100 Lap Race in the Fall Classic at Hickory Motor Speedway

Going into the weekend of this race was exciting because it was Justin’s first 100 lap race but also bittersweet because it was his last race of the 2013 season. Practice on Friday, 9/27, went very well. The car was fast and driving very smooth. The team felt very confident they had the winning combination of equipment, crew and driver to win the race. Saturday,

9/28, there were 28 Limited Late Models entered in the event. At the end of practice, Justin was 5th fastest. During qualifying each driver was given two timed laps and they took the fastest of the two. The second timed lap was the fastest for each driver. Justin qualified with a 15.480 and would line up p. 3 for the race.

The Fall Classic is the premier race at Hickory Motor Speedway for the Limited Late Models. This race on Sat., 9/28, would last 1 hour and 45 minutes and have an unbelievable 11 cautions. Justin started in p. 3 and had moved up to p. 2 by lap 5. On lap 20, Justin took over the lead and held on to the lead through lap 68. The #75 of Landon Huffman battled Justin side by side for a lap but Justin held on to the lead on the outside when the 11th caution flag flew. Starting as the leader for the longest remaining run of the race, the last 24 laps, Justin maintained the lead and crossed the finish line with a 2 car length lead over the 2nd place car.

For this race only being Justin’s 6th this season, he did phenomenal on every one of the 11 restarts during this marathon of a race. This season was nothing short of incredible. Justin’s first race ever in a Limited Late Model and he finished 6th. His second race and he records his first victory. Then he had two 4th place finishes and a 2nd place finish and this 2nd place finish was after a very long 7 weeks out of the car. This past Saturday was the perfect way to end the season, by winning his first ever 100 lap race.

Driving for Lee Faulk Racing this season, I know, Justin has learned so much. We cannot thank Lee Faulk, Michael Faulk, and all the crew members that work so hard at the track enough for always giving Justin a great car to drive. In all six races Justin competed in, he brought the car back without any damage.

Justin will continue with Lee Faulk Racing next season driving a Late Model. Currently, he will run a limited schedule of 5 races like we did this year. During the off season, we will be actively looking for businesses willing to utilize Justin as a valuable marketing and promotional tool. Racing is Justin’s passion and his career choice and he is willing to partner with businesses and make promoting companies and products part of his daily routine.
